We had a wonderful meeting last night and I would like to thank everyone for coming out to discuss JUBILEE by Margaret Walker. Welcome to new members Anquenette Michelle Perkins, Irene German, Samson Emeakpor, Jean Chamberlain, and Vijay Maddipatha we greatly appreciate your attendance and participation.
Special thanks to Willie Jones, Nettie Stowers, Dorothy Stewart and Megan Stewart for all your support! We couldn't do it without you!
The discussion was lively and timely. We highly recommend JUBILEE to anyone interested in American History, Women's History, African American History and great fiction. Margaret Walker's writing influenced the neo-slave narratives of novelists such as Toni Morrison and J. California Cooper.
The Margaret Walker Center was the perfect setting for last night's meeting. Displays in the Melvene Coney Conference Room included items mentioned in JUBILEE such as a butter churn, quilt top, cotton bolls, a framed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, and other items related to the Civil War. Audiovisual displays included a PowerPoint presentation on Margaret Walker and JUBILEE and a CD of Negro Spirituals arranged and conducted by William Levi Dawson and performed by the Tuskegee Singers. Participants also had the opportunity to examine copies of Margaret Walker's handwritten notes on JUBILEE from the Margaret Walker Personal Papers at the Margaret Walker Center
Refreshments were served and discussion turned to the timely topic of HIV/AIDS in the African American community.
